“A quest to create sounds that reflect the magnificence of nature.”

Times of India

Cabin Music is pianist and filmmaker James Carson’s nearly two-decade effort to transform the way in which music is created. Drawing on his years building and practicing in an isolated strawbale cabin, Carson's performances remove his own intentions by receiving and channeling all forces and energies within and beyond the performance space. His award-winning feature documentary debut, Cabin Music, initiates audiences into the project’s global origins. The results generate profound experiences hailed as “meditative” (Time Out New York), “shimmering” (Feast of Music), “intensely beautiful” (Mystery Catalog), and “sublime” (The Independent Critic), that transport audiences “to the stratosphere” (Berkshire Fine Arts), through “delicate music surrounded by the aura of silence” (Boston Phoenix).

DOC NYC

After building and practicing in the cabin, James spent twelve years directing Cabin Music, an award-winning feature documentary film.

“Being in the moment in the Crypt of the Church of the Intercession in Manhattan, listening to James Carson, who has worked for twenty years to develop a new music, we were transported to the stratosphere.”

Berkshire Fine Arts

He performs “trance-inducing” concerts of fully new music in venues such as the Crypt with New York’s Death of Classical.

James Carson’s debut album The Story of Birds, released on Bright Shiny Things, grew out of Carson's recurring months of isolation and practice in the cabin.
